How to Start an Organization

There are over 100 registered student organizations at Frostburg State University; however, if you don’t find one that suits your taste, there is always room for another—just follow these simple procedures.

  1. Discuss initial plans with the Director of the Lane University Center and obtain a Petition to Become a Recognized Student Organization.
  2. Complete and submit Petition to Become a Recognized Student Organization to the Lane University Center Office (LUC 237). The petition must include names of interested students and a full-time faculty/staff advisor.
  3. The petition will be reviewed by the Director of the Lane University Center. Representatives from the proposed student organization may attend or may be requested to attend a meeting with the Director during which the petition is reviewed.
  4. If the petition of the proposed student organization is approved, the members of the organization may begin drafting its constitution. The organization should follow the model constitution provided and Robert’s Rules of Order or Sturgis Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure as closely as possible.
  5. After the constitution is written in its final form, the organization must submit two copies to the Lane University Center where they will be kept in the student organization file. At the time that the constitution is reviewed for approval, the Director of the Lane University Center may notify the president and the advisor of the proposed student organization to appear at the meeting. Once the constitution of the student organization is approved, the organization shall be entitled to all rights and privileges granted to recognized student organizations.
  6. An organization may appeal action taken by the Director of the Lane University Center to the Vice President for Student and Educational Services.
  7. If, for some reason, an approved student organization becomes inactive or disbanded, it must notify the Lane University Center so that accurate records of recognized student organizations can be maintained.
  8. An inactive organization desiring to reactivate must petition the Director of the Lane University Center for active status.
  9. An organization wishing to secure funding from the Student Government Association must follow the appropriate procedures outlined S.G.A.
