Greek Life Principles

Fraternities and Sororities are self governing bodies which offer students many opportunities for leadership roles and to develop leadership skills. In an organization, members set polices, maintain budgets, plan community service and fundraising projects, and maintain high level of standards. While being in a leadership role, members learn how to motivate others, encourage critical thinking, resolve conflicts and develop communication skills. Some organizations require participation in other organizations which allows a larger opportunity for leadership roles such as: Cultural Events, University Programming Council, Residence Hall Association (RHA), Student Government Association (SGA), Black Student Alliance (BSA), and The Bottom Line, just to name a few. The annual Leadership Retreat, Student Involvement Fair, Leadership Workshop Series, and SLOOP are among some of the programs that the Greek Community participates in.

Scholarship

With the university standard being a 2.25 minimum grade point average, most national organizations require a much higher academic standard. Many organizations offer mentor sessions, study hours, and tutoring sessions as a means to promoting academic success.

Philanthropy and Service

One of the most gratifying parts of being a member of a recognized Greek organization is having the ability to help others. Each chapter has their own national and/or local philanthropies and participate in them by volunteering, fundraising, or working on projects that may need completed. Each year the organizations donate many hours and money to these philanthropy or community service efforts. Some of the organizations that the Greek Community sponsors are: Special Olympics, Relay for Life, United Way, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Community

Brotherhood and sisterhood are the bonds of community and friendship that last a lifetime. These communal bonds are not only found on a local level, but on a national and international level as well. Some organizations offer alumni events, regional retreats, and national conventions. The bonds that are created during your time as a collegian will last long after graduation.

Social

The organizations have many themes events and participate in recitals, productions, and annual events like Homecoming and Greek Week. The events allow the organizationalmembers to social in a relaxed atmosphere and intermingle with the rest of the student population.
