The Social Marketing Team began in September 2008 when former student Sharlea Shackelford '09 expressed the need for Frostburg State University to create a Facebook page to connect with students online. And thus began the origins of the Student and Community Involvement Facebook page and the leap into the digital age of marketing.
Over the years since then, Social Marketing has grown to meet the needs of current students and the campus community with the goal of engaging students in conversation and marketing Frostburg State events and opportunities to its constituents through various mediums and online forums.
Our first photos were uploaded to Flickr in July 2009. In the years since, Social Marketing Team photographers have captured thousands of photos at major Frostburg State events and student organization events. Just this past year, Social Marketing Team student photographers captured 26,000 photos at 93 events.
The first edition the electronic newsletter SpotlightOnline was published in September 2009. Since then, SpotlightOnline has been published weekly every semester since. SpotlightOnline is distributed to every undergraduate student, faculty and staff who have the option to opt-out at anytime. SpotlightOnline has grew from an 8% open rate in 2009 to an average 48% open rate.
Social Marketing Team posted its first tweet "Hello Frostburg!" on Twitter in September 2010.
As Instagram gained popularity, the Social Marketing Team assumed the personna @frostburgstatelife and began to ask students to tag their photos with #instaFrostburg.
Today, the Social Marketing team maintains two Facebook accounts - Student and Community Involvement and Social Marketing Team, the Instagram account @frostburgstatelife, a Twitter account @thesocialbobcat, creates videos and the electronic newsletter SpotlightOnline.
