As part of A STAR! in Western Maryland, the Rising STARS program is a special opportunity for upper classmen at Frostburg State University to develop strong leadership skills and promote civic engagement in the local community and on campus. Together this elite AmeriCorps unit serves as leaders to the FSU ECHOSTARS, mentors to area young people, caregivers at the local animal shelter, and supporters of cancer research, food pantries, and community events for the whole family. Rising STARS are often recognized as the most engaged students on the Frostburg State University campus. The Rising STARS demonstrate an annual commitment of 300 hours to serve Allegany and Garrett Counties, for which they receive an AmeriCorps education award of $1212. In order to apply for the Rising STARS program, students must be a U. S. citizen with a heart for service, a responsible FSU student in good academic standing, and a committed leader with effective communication skills.
