Frostburg State donates Thanksgiving dinner to local families

By Kate Sine
11/23/2015

Frostburg State University’s Office of Civic Engagement helps their community in the spirit of giving. It is time again for the Adopt-A-Family Thanksgiving Basket Program, where faculty, staff, students and student organizations on campus come together to donate traditional and or non-traditional Thanksgiving meals to a families in need. Student organizations and offices coordinate baskets by gathering food items donated by members and dropping off baskets to Civic Engagement located at The Braddock House the Monday before Thanksgiving. Civic Engagement also accepts donations from individuals as well. This year 91 baskets were donated by 36 organizations, departments, and individuals. Special thanks to SAAC Student Athlete Advisory Committee for donating 39 baskets and to the English department for donating $250 in gift cards. The Western Maryland Food Bank and the Inner Faith Food pantry assisted in gathering food while local churches informed Civic Engagement who needs the helping hand.

The baskets were dropped off at The Braddock House by noon on Monday the 23rd. Then, volunteers and students delivered the baskets to those identified in need. However, if some families did not answer their door to receive their basket, the remainder was sent to either the Western Maryland Food Bank or the Inner Faith Food Pantry – nothing was wasted.

Some families that the program serve may consist of one to two people or even eight people. Baskets may contain the Thanksgiving usual – mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, and pie while others may contain macaroni and cheese and other kinds of food.

Overall, the program benefits the donors as much as the receivers, by allowing them to see how their efforts support their community from beginning to end. They get to see with their own eyes that they made a difference to someone.

FSU is committed to making all of its programs, services and activities accessible to persons with disabilities. To request accommodations through the ADA Compliance Office, call 301-687-4102 or use a Voice Relay Operator at 1-800-735-2258.
