Melanie Campbell mentors youth

By Rose Gause
4/24/2017

Melanie CampbellMelanie Campbell has always had a passion for helping othersDuring high school she was involved with different volunteer service activities such as going to soup kitchens and helping people with special needs. When she came to Frostburg State University, she knew the ECHOSTARS, an AmeriCorps program, would be the perfect way for her to continue to serve others throughout the community. ECHOSTARS is a volunteer program for students who are committed to making a change in the community and want to gain new service and learning experiences.

“When I came to college it was nice to hear they had program based on community service. I decided to give it a try because it would help me get involved on campus and I would be able to give back to the community that I’m going to be living in now. Once I joined ECHOSTARS, I fell in love with it,” Campbell explains.

In the fall semester of her freshman year, as an ECHOSTAR, Campbell volunteered at Grantsville Elementary School mentored elementary students with their homework after schoolDuring the spring semester of her freshman year, she volunteered at the YMCA in Cumberland, MD engaging children in physical activities and assisting with homework and serving as a positive role model

Campbell also assists with special volunteer projects on the weekends. One of her favorite special projects she enjoys serving is Special Olympics MarylandAs a volunteer, she times runners, helps them practice, and cheers them on.

“It’s fun to see all the people at Special Olympics and just how happy they are to be there,” Campbell says.

Even though ECHOSTARS is a major time commitment, Campbell still manages to find time to participate in other organizations. She is a member of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity and has participated in the SOAR Leadership Seriestraining sessions for student organization leadersEach semester the ECHOSTARS program provides time management training section to its members to help balance school, service, and life

ECHOSTARS is a lot of fun it helps get you involved on campus and in the community. It helps you see more than just the typical college life. You see the impact that college students can make on the campus and community. Iconnects you with faculty and staff, and interests in other student organizations as you progress through your college career. It’s like you find another family,” Campbell says.

Campbell recently declared her major as social work, yet is unsure of which career path she wishes to take. Currently, she is exploring her career options and hopes to study abroad in the future.
