Maleeka McCutcheon models couture fashion.Frostburg State University freshman Maleeka McCutcheon will be featured in the 2017 New York Fashion Week modeling extravagant and avant-garde pieces of couture fashion. The 2017 New York Fashion Week is one of the four major fashion weeks in the world and is a semi-annual event that will begin February 9 and end on February 16. The event is held in Manhattan, New York and features talented models walking the runway in exclusive designer clothing.

Modeling for high-end events is nothing new for McCutcheon, she has modeled clothes for New York Fashion Week 2016, David’s Bridal, and BET. As McCutcheon began to model at different events she started to become a familiar face in the modeling industry. McCutcheon’s mother was soon contacted asking if her daughter could model in New York Fashion Week.

McCutcheon explained that to succeed in the modeling industry models need to expose their talents and be in the industry for a long time. McCutcheon has been exposing her talent ever since she wore her first pair of heels.

McCutcheon says, “I began modeling because I’m built like a model, I’m small, tall, skinny, and good at it. When my mom put me in my first pair of heels, I just naturally knew how to walk.”

Although modeling is enjoyable and comes easily to McCutcheon she admits she still gets nervous when modeling for high-end events.

Even with McCutcheon's busy academic and modeling schedule, she still manages to be a part of the student organization, Paparazzi Perfect modeling group while attending Frostburg State

I do it to stay in heels,” McCutcheon says, and to be involved in something I enjoy while at school.

Since having modeled professionally, McCutcheon helps Paparazzi Perfect out by giving pointers if needed. McCutcheon explains how modeling at Frostburg and in New York fashion week are different, she says, “modeling at school is more for entertainment and modeling for New York Fashion Week is strictly about showing off designer clothing.”

Modeling for events and balancing school can be hectic, but McCutcheon says her support system are her parents.

McCutcheon says “my mom is basically my manager, she will take off work any day, any time to help assist me with modeling calls. She also does the calls and the bookings.”

McCutcheon wants to one day become a professional model, but she still understands the importance of a college education.

“Modeling is my ultimate plan, but the modeling industry does not last forever and could be cut off at any time of the year, so I need a foundation,” McCutcheon says. While at Frostburg, McCutcheon is pursuing a degree in Business Administration with a marketing focus with hopes of working in the fashion industry as a future career.
