Mallow assists Hurrican Irma victims at Disney

By Rose Gause '20, Social Marketing Team Journalistic Writer9/22/2017

Josh Mallow at Disney

On the morning of Wednesday, September 13th Frostburg State University (FSU) senior Joshua Mallow arrived at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida for vacationHowever, Mallow spent the first four hours of his vacation at the Disney Learning Center lending a helping hand to those affected by Hurricane Irma. The Disney Learning Center is located in Walt Disney World and is operated by the Central Florida YMCA. It serves as a childcare center, but after Hurricane Irma, it opened its doors as a food pantry, a charging station, and a place to shower for the victims of the storm

Mallow knew the staff of the Learning Centers would be preoccupied with childcare, assisting hurricane victims and repairing building damage, and because he knows a lot of people in the central Florida areahe decided to offer his assistanceAs a volunteerhe checked people in, directed them to where they needed to go, and helped move food and water to people’s cars

“No matter how big or small a problem is, if it affects that many people, you should definitely try to make whatever difference you can, says Mallow.

Mallow has served with organizations such as the Disney VoluntEARS program, West Virginia Flood Recovery, and the Allegany County Animal Shelter in the pastHe currently does not have any community service planned, but if something comes up he will be more than happy to help.

“If I have free time and can go and help make somebody’s life better and take that stress off of them. Why not? It’s something that I’m passionate about and really think that a lot of people should be passionate about. No one is invincible and if I were ever in a situation where there was a disaster, then I would like to think people would be willing and want to come help me. I want to be able to take advantage of that knowing that I’ve done my part to help others as well, says Mallow.

Mallow is currently involved in Greek life as a member of Phi Sigma Pi and multiple organizations that are based on philanthropy. He serves as the Read to Succeed Program Coordinator, Vice President of Greek Council, a team leader for SafeRideand Peer Assistance Learning Services (PALS) mentor.

Mallow will be graduating in May 2018 with an undergraduate degree in liberal studies and a minor in management. He plans on continuing his studies to earn a Master of Arts in organizational leadership with a concentration in human resource development. One day he hopes to work as a Leadership and Development manager with Disney Cruise Line.
