Spring 2018 Greek Presidents Retreat
Frostburg State University’s Greek Life presidents spent January 24-26 at Loyola University Maryland Retreat Center located in the mountains of Flintstone, MD. Throughout the three days, the presidents bonded, attended workshops and came up with ways to enhance FSU’s Greek life community.

The presidents engaged in different team building, leadership, and personal growth exercises. They even had the chance to socialize and relax over a bonfire. Accompanying them were members of Greek council; Jamie Winters, assistant director of Greek Life, Robert Cooper, director of Student Activities and Greek Life; and Jason Andrick, advisor of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and major gifts officer for University Advancement who all discussed key topics on how to improve their recruitment, leadership skills, philanthropy, finances, and networking. Each president had a fun and unique experience and is eager to apply what they learned to their chapters.

Frostburg State University's Greek Life presidents are: Tyler Steele, Sigma Alpha Epsilon; Ryan adamski, Tau Kappa Epsilon; Vaughn Heflin, Pi Lambda Phi; Sean Black, Phi Mu Delta; Samuel Cantler, Kappa Delta Rho; Mason Snyder, Sigma Tau Gamma; Ellie Bolton, Alpha Sigma Tau; Jordan Day, Delta Zeta; Lauren Gross, Alpha Sigma Alpha; Damilola Fagbohun, Delta Sigma Pi; Taylor Watkins, Alpha Phi Omega; Kristin Radcliff, Phi Sigma Pi, Aiden Cornett, Kappa Pi, Jabari Walker, Iota Phi Theta; Isaiah Bell, Phi Beta Sigma; Bentley Ukonu, Kappa Alpha Psi; Michaela Campbell, Delta Sigma Theta; Aaron Amaker, Phi Mu Alpha; and Amy Cook, Sigma Alpha Iota.

Amy Cook is president of Sigma Alpha Iota, a member of the jazz ensemble, a student success mentor, and a Lane University Technical Crew member. She is a junior pursuing a degree in early childhood education. She plans on applying the knowledge learned from the team building and leadership exercises to communicating better with her sorority sisters and collaborating better with other organizations.

“The retreat was definitely fun. If I had to pick only one word to describe the trip, I would say 'inspiring.' Hopefully, the relationships made will take off and make our organizations bigger, better, and able to work together more to become better for our campus,” says Cook.

Tyler Steele is president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a member of LEAD (Learn, Empower, Develop, and Act) and a member of college for Democrats and Republicans. He is a senior pursuing a degree in English. While on the retreat, he was able to learn about the organizational structure of other president’s weekly meetings which was something his organization needed to improve on. He plans to now apply what he has learned to make his own meetings more orderly and effective.

“The trip was a good mix of focus things and fun things. I think it was perfect in the way that it was set up. The biggest thing I learned while there is that a lot of the organizations have the same problems. We tend to think it’s just our chapter, but a lot of the organizations in Greek life have similar issues whether its finances, recruitment, or individuals in the chapter not being motivated enough. Being able to talk to the other presidents about that and how they may have solved it a year ago and then applying that to my chapter has helped a lot,” says Steele.

Damilola Fagbohun is president of Delta Sigma Pi. She is a junior pursuing a degree in accounting. The speech on finances given by Andrick gave Fagbohun a better perspective on how to manage her chapter’s finances. The excel sheet given to all the presidents with their estimated expenses helped her have a better understanding of how to allocate her chapter’s finances and is something she can always refer back to.

“I learned everyone is going through the same thing as I am. People may have already jumped that hurdle or are going through something that I already overcame. So, I know that I am not alone in whatever I’m going through,” says Fagbohun.
