Clark awarded Volunteer and Community Engagement Award

By Kate Sine

Lisa Clark

Often during the holiday seasons people take the extra step to spread the holiday spirit by extending a helping hand in their communities. For A STAR! in Western Maryland, this is the norm, year around! A STAR in Western Maryland, ASTAR, has served the four westernmost counties in Maryland since 1994 providing direct services focused on education, healthy futures, wellness and outreach.

Frostburg State University serves as the intermediary for the ASTAR grant which has community partners spanning four counties. Examples from each county of community partners include: Garrett County Health Department, USM Garrett County Extension Office, Frostburg State University, Allegany College of Maryland, Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County, United Way of Frederick County, Asian American Center and Frederick Community Action.

AmeriCorps members are charged with providing direct services through their partnering service site focusing on academic engagement, housing and food security, interpretation/translation services, volunteer management and recruitment as well as in and out of school programming.

Lisa Clark, Director of ASTAR! in Western Maryland, has been involved with the ASTAR program since its inception in 1994. Clark is a proud resident of Frederick County and is married to Mark Clark. Her daughter is currently a senior at Frostburg State University.

Over the past two decades, Clark has worked with AmeriCorps and volunteers within her community. Recently, Clark was recognized for her service and volunteerism through Maryland Campus Compact and the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism. Clark was later awarded the Volunteer and Community Engagement Award given by the Asian American Center of Frederick at their 10th Anniversary Gala held in Frederick. Three individuals were recognized for their accomplishments in their community. The event was held to recognize the community leaders as well as the remarkable accomplishments of the Asian American Center over their 10 years serving Frederick County.
