Junie B. Jones The Musical

CES Educational Outreach partners with FSU Theatre & Dance, local schools

By Kate Sine

Kids love entertainment. They also enjoy reading books with interesting characters and story plots such as Junie B. Jones. Local schools and the University have partnered to come up with the following educational technique. As part of the school curriculum, teachers instruct students to read a book before taking the class on a field trip to see the theatrical production of said book.

Hannah Byler, CES Educational Outreach Coordinator of Frostburg State University helps coordinate the outreach between the University and local schools. Schools contact Byler to request showtimes the CES and FSU Theatre and Dance production of Junie B. Jones – The Musical held November 2-4 at 10 AM in the Performing Arts Center.

Local students interact with performers at a previous CES performance.

Around 900 students from elementary schools in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania will attend the performance to reinforce the learning from the classroom. Frostburg State University theatre students performing in the musical will  tour  at other schools near the University.

Overall, Hannah Byler enjoys the partnership between the schools, CES and FSU Theatre and Dance.

Hannah Byler They compliment she receives at the end of the show, “My favorite part is when you see the kids’ smiles and see their first contact with theater occur,” she says.

This may be the first time kids will see a live performance. To see their favorite hapless six-year- old straight out of the books that they have been reading. That is special.
