Bennie Watson serves as lead videographer
for National Association of Campus Activities

By Rose Gause

Frostburg State senior Bennie Watson had the opportunity to volunteer as lead videographer at the National Association of Campus Activities in Baltimore, MD from February 18-21. NACA is one of the largest campus activity networking conventions in the world. The convention exposes talents, ideas, and resources for campus life while providing students with resources, internships, and networking opportunities.

While at NACA, Watson helped set up backstage, but his primary job was to control the camera. He captured close up shots of performances and recorded live for 2,000 people to be able to see the event activities on the big screens. As expected, being able to work the camera was the best part of the NACA experience for him.

“I enjoyed working the camera. I was surprised they actually let me work the action camera. It just showed they felt confident in me,” Watson says.

Watson shares his talents with the Frostburg State community as head videographer for the Creative Communication Club as well as the Social Marketing Team. He is a mass communications major with a focus in video production and a minor in graphic design.

Watson was recommended to participate in NACA by the Social Marketing Team advisor Missy Martz, someone who is very familiar with his talent. He went through the application process and was chosen from a pool of national applicants.

"I am so glad Bennie was selected to put his video talent to work for a great organization. Connecting students with experiences which match their passions, such as Bennie's, is the real reward," says Martz.

“It gave me a real perception on the bigger picture of video production. I feel going through classes teaches you about video production, but when you go out to a major platform you really get to see how it is in the real world. Also meeting people that could open doors for me, later on, was really important,” Watson says.

Although the volunteer experiences with NACA are intended for undergraduate students and Watson is expected to graduate soon, he says, “I would go back again if it was offered. The experience at NACA was something I definitely needed. I learned more about the business aspect of videography and it was just really important for me to get that experience.”

While NACA has been a great experience for Watson, so has being a mass communications major at Frostburg State. “Frostburg has a new mass communication center and they have state of the art equipment. The professors...for mass communication have been dedicated to me. They know my passion and what I am trying to do as far as open my own business. So everyone has been taking the time to get me ready for my career and to graduate,” he says.

Watson has already started on his career path into videography. He works with students and freelances as a videographer and graphic designer. Find his work on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube under the name bigbenvisions. He continues to build his brand so he can one day be in a position to open doors for other students who are in his current position.
