On January 25, Frostburg State University senior Michael Bartholomew was offered a $150,000 scholarship to attend law school at George Washington University. George Washington University is a private research university located in Washington, D.C. and the oldest law school in the nation’s capital.
Receiving the scholarship should have been no surprise for Bartholomew because he has excelled in his studies at Frostburg and has been awarded Dean’s List every semester since his freshman year. He is majoring in political science, philosophy and, law & society.
Bartholomew currently serves as the Lane University Center Info Desk Manager, president of Pi Lambda Phi, and is a member of the President's Leadership Circle.
Bartholomew explains how his involvement in activities and work at Frostburg has helped better prepare him for a career in law. He says, “Being a manager at the Lane University Center has taught me a lot about managing a building and a group of people. The president position of Pi Lambda Phi has taught me a lot about dealing with conflict, interpersonal relationships, arguing, public speaking and having to get your objective across.”
Bartholomew’s passion for law comes from injustice. He says, “I saw a lot of injustice in the world today. My thought was I’m good at public speaking, I’m good at working with people, and I like law and political stuff. So I should do my part to go into law to fix issues and to help people.”
As a career goal, Bartholomew says, “I hope to go into civil rights law and depending...where life takes me either continue practicing civil rights law or move on to become a judge or get involved in politics in some level.”
As a senior, Bartholomew's time as a student at Frostburg is soon coming to an end with graduation approaching. He explains how Frostburg has given him opportunities that he does not think he would have had at other universities. He is glad he was able to make close connections with people, professors, and specifically Dr. Scott Johnson, his pre-law advisor.
George Washington University is only 1 out of 10 law schools Bartholomew has applied to attend. He has also been offered a full scholarship to West Virginia University. He is still patiently waiting to hear back from Yale and Harvard University his top choices.
