Minimum Expectations

The Task Force perceived that while some components of the Minimum Expectations that were established in 1986 are still applicable some issues needed to be updated and others had simply not been addressed. In order to set the expectations at a level that will push our groups to once again identify with the foundations of service, scholarship and leadership we propose the following set of standards:

1. Each individual fraternity/sorority must support the Greek Council. Support is defined as sending one executive officer, preferably the same member for each semester, to every Greek Council meeting. The representative should be prepared to update the other organizations on their chapter’s scholarship, leadership, and service initiatives.

2. Each group must have a full-time college faculty or staff member as an advisor. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the loss of Lane University Center privileges, and a group may not participate in the new member recruitment process without an advisor.

3. A registration form, active member roster, general membership information form, chapter constitution (National Constitution & Bylaws required where applicable), a copy of the organizations risk management plan, and chapter goals are due before the end of the second week of each semester. Associate member rosters are due within one week of the completion of the intake/recruitment process. Failure to meet this expectation will result in the loss of Lane University Center privileges until the appropriate paperwork has been turned into the office.

4. New Member Recruitment & Education:

  • New member recruitment (for students who have earned 12 credit hours & a cumulative GPA of 2.25) and education programs may be held both semesters.
  • The new member educator must meet with the Director of Greek Life & Leadership Programs and have the chapters plan approved BEFORE the new member education process can begin.
  • All new member program activities must comply with University policies as listed in the Pathfinder, residence hall contract, etc. Activities may not occur in the Library, Chesapeake, or in the Residence Halls.
  • All new members must attend an Anti-Hazing workshop within the first two weeks of their new member period. All NPHC groups must have members attend the workshop within 2 weeks of crossing over. All new members must sign the Anti-Hazing contract that is distributed at the end of the workshop.
  • New member education programs may not be longer than 8 weeks (less when stated in a chapter’s National Policy).

5. All Independently Recognized Organizations will be on preliminary standing for a period of one year, during which time they are required to meet all minimum expectations. At the end of the one-year period, providing all minimum expectations have been continuously met, the organization will be granted full status.

6. All Organizations, whether nationally affiliated or independently recognized, are required to follow Federal, State, University, and Local rules and regulations.

7. No recognized group may be deemed, or identify as, little sisters or brothers of any other organization.

8. No discrimination on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, handicap or religion is to be practiced by a national or independently recognized organization at any time. Violations of this policy will be immediately referred to the University Judicial Board.

9. Each recognized organization, whether nationally or independently recognized, must carry liability insurance in an amount to be based annually on the average national insurance standard.

10. All members are required to participate in a study habits seminar and a time management workshop prior to affiliation. In additional all chapter members are required to attend the Greek Leadership Conference, and all other workshops and seminars as determined by Greek Council.

11. Each chapter must plan and implement two campus activities per semester for the campus community. One event must be educational and the other social.

12. Participate in a minimum of 40 hours of community service per semester/per chapter. All hours must be reported to the Office of Greek Life & Leadership Programs after each event.

13. To assist each chapter in assuring proper fiscal soundness, a chapter budget sheet must be turned in each semester. All income and expenses must be documented, including your chapter’s social fee. The Office of Greek Life & Leadership Programs must be provided with a copy of financial reports and standings.

14. At the end of each semester a report is due to the Director of Greek Life & Leadership programs which details all chapter activities for the semester. This report should include: socials, leadership activities, campus community activities, community service, scholarship, summary of financial standing, and explanation of any violations that were assessed to the organization.

15. In order to be eligible to join a Greek organization, students must have successfully completed 12 credit hours, have cumulative and previous semester GPA of 2.0, and be a currently enrolled, full-time (at least 12 credit hours) student. Some organizations will have standards that exceed these minimum expectations.

16. In order to remain in good standing each organization is required to maintain a cumulative chapter GPA of at least 2.25. Failure to meet this requirement will result in academic warning from the Office of Greek Life & Leadership and the organization will not be permitted to hold any social functions until the chapters average has once again exceeded the minimum expectation.

17. Groups who are expelled from campus will not be allowed to return, either as a National or an Independently Recognized Organization.

18. Groups who have left campus and become an unrecognized organization will not be eligible to return to campus until they have petitioned the Greek Life Task Force, completed the Independent Review process, served a probation period, and then been reinstated, either as a National or Independently Recognized Organization.

19. New groups wishing to obtain recognition must petition the Greek Life Task Force, complete the Independent Review process, serve a probation period, and then receive full standing.

20. Each Independently Recognized Organization must undergo a formal review process every 3 years.

21. 2/3 of an Organization’s, whether Independently Recognized or National, programming events (i.e. speakers, comedians, panel discussions, etc.) must occur on the FSU campus.

22. Groups who have been suspended are eligible to petition for an Independent Review process after their suspension period has ended.
