THE WORLD FAMOUS
COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA
DIRECTED BY BILL HUGHES
FEATURING BUTCH MILES
WITH SPECIAL GUEST
NNENNA FREELON
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 ~ 7:30PM
PEALER RECITAL HALL, PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Following their yearlong celebration of Count Basies 100th birthday, the world famous Count Basie Orchestra joins six-time Grammy Award-nominated vocalist Nnenna Freelon for an unforgettable evening of jazz, soul, gospel, and blues. The legendary Billie Holiday sang for a time with Count Basie. Together, they began a different and scintillating vocalist with big band legacy. Inspired by Freelons Blueprint of a Lady: Sketches of Billie Holiday, New Concord Records recording, Freelon and the Basie Orchestra bring their unique interpretation to those songs, and add some of their own to celebrate this chapter in the Basie-Holiday history. The Count Basie Orchestra directed by Bill Hughes and featuring Butch Miles, consists of 19 musicians dedicated to continuing the legacy of one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time; they are in constant demand for TV and films, have won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, and continue to accumulate awards and special recognitions. Nnenna Freelons voice is remarkable for its range and dynamics; her phrasing is precise and straight out of the jazz tradition but with a slightly modern, even hip-hoppish flavor. Singer, composer, producer and arranger, she has earned the Billie Holiday Award and the Eubie Blake Award as well as accolades for her work on behalf of children and education. Together, they will sweep you off your feet as they celebrate Billie and Basie.
